Generation 7 Celica VVTL-I Spark Plug Change Guide
Overview
This is a step by step guide on how to replace the spark plugs on the 2ZZ-GE engine. This procedure is suitable for novices with little or no mechanical experience. I take no responsibility for any damage caused by anyone following these instructions. You follow these at your own risk!
The spark plugs for the 2ZZ-GE engine found in the 190/T Sport Celicas are required to be changed every 60,000 miles. Due to the high performance nature of the 2ZZ-GE engine, the spark plugs are iridium tipped. Due to this, the spark plugs last longer than standard copper tipped plugs and they are also more expensive at around £10 each.
Tools required
10mm socket
Socket wrench
16mm spark plug removal tool
Extension bar for the removal tool
Parts required
4 x suitable spark plugs. See the spark plug section for suitable recommendations.
Installation time
Approximately 15 minutes.
Installation
Wait until the engine is cold before attempting this procedure.
Step 1
Ensure the engine is off and open the bonnet.
Step 2
You will see on top if the engine the 4 coil packs. These are secured with 1 10mm bolt each. Remove the 4 bolts.
Step 3
Remove the electrical connector from each of the 4 coil packs.
Step 4
Gently pull up on each coil pack and remove from their housing.
Step 5
If you look into the hole you will see the top of the spark plug. Using the spark plug removal tool and a suitable extension, unscrew the spark plug and remove it completely from the hole. Repeat this procedure for the other 3 spark plugs.
Step 6
Lightly, insert a new spark plug into the spark plug tool. Insert the spark plug in to housing and gently tighten by hand. Take special care not to cross thread the spark plug as this could cause serious damage and make the car undriveable until repaired by a specialist. Once the spark plug is in hand tight, tighten further until secure. Take care not to over tighten. Repeat this procedure for the 3 remaining spark plugs.
Step 7
Re-install the coil packs and secure in place with their bolt. Re-connect the electrical connectors.
Step 8
Start the engine and ensure the engine runs smoothly.
